Detailed Explanation of 20 Different Pump Types(5)

5. Reciprocating Pump

The reciprocating pump is a positive displacement pump. When the flow rate provided by the pump exceeds the demand of the pipeline, a portion of the flow must be diverted back to the pump's inlet, known as bypass regulation.

Performance characteristics:

Advantages:

(1) It can achieve high discharge pressure, with flow rate independent of pressure, excellent suction performance, and relatively high efficiency, with steam reciprocating pumps reaching 80%~95%;  (2) In principle, it can transport any medium, almost unrestricted by the physical or chemical properties of the medium;  (3) The pump's performance remains unaffected by changes in pressure or the viscosity of the transported medium. No other pump possesses the aforementioned outstanding advantages of reciprocating pumps, but they have simpler structures, more convenient operation, and additional benefits such as compact size, lightweight, uniform flow, and the capability for series production in batches.

Disadvantages: The flow rate is not very stable. Compared to centrifugal pumps, it is bulkier under the same flow rate; the structure is complex; the capital investment is high; and it is difficult to maintain.
